The dutch Stichting Geschiedenis Kinder- en Jeugdliteratuur (SGKJ) or Society for the History of Children's and Youth Literature, established in 1985, is a non-gouvernemental, non-profit organization supported by donations. It represents a network of scholars, private collectors, library and museum specialists, antiquarian booksellers and other people interested in children's and youth literature and related subjects of days gone by.

The mission of the SGKJ is to promote the interest in research, publication, preservation of children's en youth's books and prints and the exchange and proliferation of knowledge about it by:

  • publication of the quarterly Berichten uit de wereld van het oude kinderboek (Messages from the world of the old children's book)

  • organisation of a seminar twice a year; De studiedagen

  • the Van Veen Kring were scholars and researchers share their -often preliminary- results with members of the society

  • excursions with lectures to expositions twice a year

  • the publication of a book in the series De Waare Rijkdom (The true wealth) as a New Year's gift for the members of the SGKJ

  • presenting bi-yearly the Hieronymus van Alphen Award to recognize the excellence and merits of a person supporting the society’s mission. The ceremony takes place during the autumn seminar

  • this website with information about the society and

  • a virtual library of old children's and movable books

  • a virtual printroom with catchpenny prints, children's calligraphy, decorated sheets and presentation of paper toys
